Foraging Courses for Schools

What Do We Offer?

We have over 25 years of school teaching experience and with our added knowledge of the British landscape we offer fun, educational foraging experiences that aim to transport students back through Prehistory to the time of hunter-gatherers here in Britain.

Each of our courses uses documented evidence to help pupils understand methods of historical enquiry giving them a connection to our ancestors and bringing history alive. We will look at evidence of Mesolithic occupation which allows us to literally walk in their footsteps. How did they live? What was their connection to the landscape? And importantly, what did they eat and how did their instinct for survival drive their knowledge of their natural surroundings.

Foraged food identification is at the heart of each lesson but we will also attempt to mirror the skills of our ancestors by learning to read the landscape as they would have. Animal tracking, finding direction using the trees and plants and prehistoric tool making is also central to learning.

Our courses can be adapted to be cross-curricular depending on the topics you are covering in your setting. Whether it's science and evolution, geography and understanding how the climate and land masses have changed over time, or art and how hunter-gatherers decorated their dwellings, we can knowledgeably adapt to you.

We currently offer courses for:

  • Key Stage 2 – ages 7-11 (Years 3-6)

  • Key Stage 3 – ages 11-14 (Years 7-9)

  • Key Stage 4 – ages 14-16 (Years 10-11)

  • Key Stage 5 Sixth form Secondary and FE College

Where Do Our Courses Take Place?

If you have a woodland or area of natural habitat at your school we can come to you, although we have a number of sites around the UK each offering something a little different in terms of habitat and the skills learned.

Many of our courses can be presented in a condensed form during lessons or a school assembly. These will enable pupils to gain a deeper understanding of their local, British, and world history from late Neolithic hunter gathers right up to and including the introduction of farming.

Trips can be fully linked to the national curriculum and bespoke courses are provided depending on school requirements. We're never too far from our prehistory wherever we are in the country so we can usually apply a surprising connection to the Stone Age, Bronze Age, or Iron Age at most sites.

How Long Do The Courses Last?

Our courses run from one hour to one full day with breaks.

What's the Cost?

Our courses are fairly wide-ranging so costs will differ depending on requirements but we are adept at providing competitive and memorable experiences to suit all budgets so just give us a call to discuss.
